Barbara Dowsett has taught instrumental music for over 30 years –25 of those in Minnedosa, Manitoba where she directed the band program from grade 6-12. The band program under her direction was awarded the first annual Don Green award at the Winnipeg Optimist International Band Festival in 2006 for the development of an outstanding band program. Minnedosa bands were awarded consistently for outstanding performance and received invitations to perform at Rocky Mountain Festival in Banff as well as MusicFest Canada. Barb continues teaching music via instrumental clinics, honour bands, adjudicating festivals, and supervising pre-service band teachers.
Barb has presented sessions at music conferences including the Manitoba Music Conference for music educators, Avenues, and at BU’s Da Capo conference. She has been the guest conductor for the Louis Riel SD Concert Band Celebration, Park West School Division, the Central Manitoba Intermediate Honour Band, and the BU Clarinet Choir to name a few. She has also adjudicated at Manitoba Band Assoc. Level One Band Festival, Birdtail Festival, Virden Music & Arts Festival, Souris Solo & Ensemble Festival, Meridian Arts Festival, Western S.D. Band Festival, Rolling River Festival of the Arts, and Swan River Festival.
Barb holds a Bachelor and a Master’s degree in Music Education from Brandon University, completed the diploma in Wind Conducting from the University of Calgary in 1998, and the University of Manitoba Canadian Wind Conductors Development Program in 2006. She currently is the chair of Manitoba Band Association’s Mentorship Program. Her other interests revolve around music and her family. She has in the past conducted the Strathclair community choir, served as musical director, choreographer and actor for Strathclair Drama Club, played in a celtic band, and conducted the Minnedosa United Church choir. She lives in Minnedosa with her husband Barry and two children.
